After the recent ban in 2016 on halogen lamps and considering that LED lights are 90% more
efficient and last 10 times longer, it makes LED’s the obvious choice for the environment and
energy-saving.
There are three main options for upgrading from halogen to LED, depending on the type of
downlights and halogen lamps currently in use.
The first option is retrofitting an MR16 LED, which involves replacing low voltage MR16
50W halogens that have low voltage 12V transformers.
The second option is converting to GU10 LED, which involves converting low voltage
halogens into mains voltage GU10 by ordering basic GU10 lamp holders, a GU10 lamp
holder with connector block, and GU10 LEDs.
The third option is installing brand new LED downlights, either new GU10 LED downlights
or integrated LED downlights.
Replacing GU10 halogens is the easiest option, as LED GU10 lamps can be swapped straight
over without any wiring or transformers to consider.
Overall, choosing the right option for you depends on the type of downlights and halogen
lamps you have, and some options may require additional costs or rewiring by a qualified
electrician.
